This book did, however, make me pick up a book comforg chess, and I’m enjoying learning how to play, but I know I have many miles to go and I wasn’t about to put off finishing this book while I boned up on my middle game. It’s almost like they give evil a new name.
He was so well written, I never doubted his authenticity one bit. In Nazi Germany, Saul was one of many Jews who were used by a comforf Nazi known as The Oberst to play a sinister game of human chess.
But this story would be nothing without the anti heroes-the enemies-the villains. Simmons sets a stage of believability by referencing a number of horrific events such as the Kennedy and Lennon assassinations and weaves a network of conspiracies and chess moves, the latter being a tantalizing motif throughout, that pulls this story way beyond the normal horror novel.

The one truly terrifying monster in the book is figuratively castrated by the fact that the author thought it would be a sound idea to call him the “Honky Monster”. The word just sounds ugly, and I don’t want to listen to it. Every word was perfect. He then worked in elementary education for 18 years—2 years in Missouri, 2 years in Buffalo, New York—one year as a specially trained BOCES “resource teacher” and another as a sixth-grade teacher—and 14 years in Colorado.
A lot of riveting plot is generated from this simple premise. Saul becomes a willing pawn in the “game,” having trained himself with self-hypnosis for months to memorize as many details as possible of the lives of death camp victims and survivors of the holocaust so that when Willi attempts to control him, the memories of others will confuse Willi in a way that will gain Saul a few seconds to attack and kill the old man.
His prose is elegant and Dickensian. I loved this book, as sick as it is. This is the equivalent of naming Dracula the “Neck Sucker! Not sure, but there are similarities. Should you involve others in what you know is a deadly conflict? Want to Read saving…. Yet after I’ve said all that, it still remains one of the best horror novels of the second half of the 2oth century. I felt as though I struggled with them, and tried to give them hope.
I loved the little links between everything. Would you have done what ever it took to survive as a Jew in the camps, including tacit collaboration, by working for the Nazis? First of all, this book is absolutely mammoth. The most chilling scenes for me were of Willi’s younger years as a Nazi, and his dabbles into the lives of concentration camp prisoners. Is inaction morally justified?
And no, that’s no exaggeration. Everyone’s character was perfect for Carrion Comfort. In a perfect world, a reader will never feel like skimming, but we all know that even the best novels can have unneeded information This, in the realm of fiction, is called pacing.
There are thousands of studies that have been done on chapter and comfot length, but the truth of the matter is: Harod believes this interrogation about the Island Club is the work of Willi, using Saul and Natalie, and he is released, being told to follow Willi’s instructions, upon penalty of death, through his supposed pawns Saul and Natalie.
