There are myriads of other references and it is a complex and enthralling work. There is something in this book that is aspiring to the high Modernism of the works of Joyce and Proust, but then there is something gaddid towards the meta-fiction to come on the scene in the next decade.

Reading a novel of punishing difficulty and length is a version of climbing Everest for people who prefer not to leave the house.

But JR is such a perfect realisation of its own premises that its shortcomings clearly expose the limitations of its chosen style, and for this reason it struggles as a work which is to be read.
